DRUNKEN WOMEN KILLED TWO IN MUMBAI

Mumbai's Marine Drive became the scene of a horrific midnight accident on Friday. A drunk woman driver hit her SUV into six people at a police check post. A biker who had been pulled over for a breathanalyzer test died immediately.

A policeman, PSI Dinanath Shinde died on Saturday morning in hospital. Four other policemen have been injured and are in the Bombay Hospital.

The crash took place near Parsi Dairy on Marine Drive. 

The woman driver has been identified as 27-year-old Nooriya Yusuf Haweliwala. She has been sent to police custody till February 5.

She is a beautician and lives with her family in Colaba.

It's now confirmed that the test conducted on her has found 457 ml of alcohol, which is way over the permissible limit of 50 ml.

The police have slapped several charges against her including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Other charges include causing death by negligent driving.

"The car rammed into a taxi and the police personnel who were a part of the drive against drunken driving as well as a member of the general public were hit. They have been admitted to a hospital. The driver of the car has been apprehended," said ACP Tadankar.

SCOOL KALOLSAVAM HISTORY

The first School Kalolsavam was inaugurated by the, then Minister for Education, Prof. Joseph Mundassery in January 1957. When the school Kalolsavam began, it had'nt reached anywhere near the variety, pomp and the vast canvas which the festival has now reached. Dr.C.S.Venkiteswaran was the DPI in 1956. He had the opportunity to participate in the Inter-University festival at Delhi during that time. This inspired this great visionary to organize a similar festival at school level and thus he sowed the seed of School Kalotsavam at Ernakulam SRV High School in 1956. The programme then was scheduled for one day and there were 200 participants. Mid-day meal and tea were served. Participation was directly from school level.

Year after year more and more items were included, and the number of days of the Kalotsavam was increased. Many art forms of Kerala tradition like Kathakali music, Mohiniyattom, Aksharaslokam etc. got entry into Kalolsavam. As a prelude to the Kalotsavam, proclamation rally was organised in 1975. Later on Margomkali, Kuchipudi, Yakshaganam, Band display etc. were included into the Kalolsavam. Now the number of participants have increased to 10000. The Kalolsavam which was a business of one day in 1956-57, has become a festival of 7 days. The decorative main stage accommodates thousands of people. Delicious breakfast, mid day meals & supper for nearly ten thousand participants is served on these days.

In 1986 Gold medals were introduced for Kalathilakam & Kalaprathibha. A 117.5 sovereign Gold Cup was introduced in 1987 for the District that secured maximum points. In the year 2000, Millenium trophy, a beautiful dancing Nataraja trophy, was introduced. Today the winners are awarded numerous trophies, cash prizes, grace marks etc.

The Kerala School Kalolsavam Manual was introduced in 1992 to give a formal shape to the festival. The practice of selecting Kalathilakam & Kalaprathiba was eliminated to avoid unhealthy competition. In 2009 Higher Secondary kalolsavam was merged with School Kalolsavam to make it bright and colourful.

The festival has a foolproof system to encourage thousands of students in various Art & Literary forms in each academic year. Perfect time management, impartial Judgement, on the spot arrangements to settle appeals etc. make the art festival unique one in all aspects.
